Bat Cave near Thanlyin river, Hpa-an, Kayin state, Myanmar. We found an entranceway through Buddhist monastery near Than Lwin Bridge. We left our motorbike in the monastery compound and locked the handling. Walkthrough the monastery and follow up the trail to the cave near Than Lwin River.
We arrived at Bat cave is just around 5:30 pm in June, the raining season in Hpa an. After walking the small trails there’s a local couple and a kid was sitting in a small cottage, seem that they live in front of the cave. They said the birds will come out at around 6:30. There’s no tourist, we are a little bit early.
Too many sightseeing around Hpa An by motorbike, we are tired and have to get back to town early. But our minds want to see more, We found a way beside the pagoda which will lead to the cliff. There are couples of stone steps and two more scary iron ladder up to the little pagoda was on it.
The wind was strong and Zwekabin mountain was beautiful with the Than Lwin river. We saw many beautiful mountains near the cement factory and took some pictures. A guy from Spain just came up and he talked about his travel stories around two weeks in Myanmar. We love to hear it from him while we were waiting. we suggest some nice and cheap restaurants for him.
He will be out from Myawaddy through to Thailand, after taking a day trip to Mawlamyine tomorrow.
The more dark approach, we climb down to see the bats. There are five more travelers down there already, all of them are backpackers from various countries. The bats are just starting to come out of the cave across the river.
Thousands of Bats are going out for food across the river. It takes around 20 minutes to watch thousands of bats coming out of the cave. It was very exciting, looks like a snake and dragon shape, we were hiding behind the rocks. The couple who live there are striking barrels and making loud sounds to make sure they got the right path.
